An Introduction - Top
The Hull Council of Disabled People (HCDP)is a charitable organisation serving the needs of disabled and vulnerable people in the Hull area. It was conceived during the International year of Disabled people in 1981, and opened its centre at 35 Ferensway in 1983. This multifunctional centre is the base for promoting independent living for people with disabilities in the Hull area.

We promote all aspects relating to the welfare of disabled and vulnerable people including education, health and poverty issues which are deemed charitable by law within the Kingston Upon Hull area. We do this by empowering our clients, providing free impartial, confidential accurate and practical advice services for disabled and vulnerable people and other organisations.

Success - Top
Success came to the venture due to the hard work of the committee and volunteers and the popularity of the centre grew, attracting funding for revenue from Hull City Council and support from local businesses. Funding is received from various sources including the Kingston Upon Hull City Council, and was received from the National Lotteries Board and Joint Financial Projects to name a few. This has allowed us to employ paid staff in management and administration positions, thereby enabling us to introduce higher levels of professionalism both in administration and the way we work.

Since it’s creation the organisation has become well known and respected for its work with disabled and vulnerable people and for being a progressive organisation. We have built many links and bridges with other local groups as well as national and statutory bodies. Our committee members maintain a busy schedule of attendance at external meetings and participate in discussions to influence and provide direction on a variety of social disability issues such as, parking for disabled and vulnerable people, issuing of Blue Badges, access to buildings and other issues.

Development - Top
Over the last few years we have developed our range of activities to include support for the training of disabled and vulnerable people on college & university placements in IT, skills development and administration. We are also providing placements for the volunteer option of the New Deal, Action for employment and Pathways to Work schemes giving both training and work experience.

We are also a regular contributor to the local newspapers with articles of particular interest to disabledand vulnerable people. Volunteers are supported with a wide choice of training opportunities. Centre activities now include regular and well supported bingo sessions, quizzes etc. Regular successful fund raising efforts have enabled us to modernise our offices, and cafeteria as well as our gardening and decorating projects vehicle etc.
